We’re Not Worthy!

I’ve already mentioned that Alice is one of my absolute favourite rock stars. Yesterday was my lucky day: I got to see him live, at the Atlantico in Rome.

It was quite simply the best concert I have ever been to in my life. He was awesome.

He opened with The Black Widow, then after a newish one which I can’t remember went on to classics including Muscle Of Love, Under My Wheels, I’m 18, No More Mr Nice Guy, Billion Dollar Babies, Cold Ethyl, Only Women Bleed… there was a new song, I’ll Bite your Face Off, plus a few from his later era: Hey Stoopid, Poison, Feed My Frankenstein, Wicked Young Man, and one which I was quite proud of being seemingly the only person there able to sing along to: Clones (We’re All), from the album Flush The Fashion. Then there was School’s Out, performed in a brilliantly successful medley with Another Brick In The Wall (part 2).

The band were excellent and I imagine all carefully chosen for their stage presence as well as their musicianship – they really added to the event, it wasn’t a case of Alice plus anonymous musicians. They merit a name check: guitarists Orianthi – first I’d ever heard of her, but hopefully not the last, Steve Hunter, and Tommy Henriksen; bassist Chuck Garric; and drummer Glen Sobel.

But it was the show that made it special, and indeed it’s what he’s famous for: from his entry on stage in a spider costume at the top of a platform for The Black Widow, to the 20-foot Frankenstein tottering around the stage, the dance with the black-eyed dummy during Cold Ethyl and Only Women Bleed, the masks donned by the band for Clones, the guillotine wheeled on at the end for the beheading of Alice, following which his executioner capered round stage with his bloody head…

The grand finale was Elected, which Alice performed wearing an Italia football shirt under the trademark silver suit and top hat while waving the Italian flag, adapting the lyrics to suit.

Ah, it was great. I still haven’t stopped grinning.
